How to Install and Maintain Your Mobile Home Window Awnings

Dura-Bilt® Aluminum Window Awning on a mobile home

Have you ever been sitting comfortably in your mobile home, only to have to get up and move from the sun blind through your old windows? Or maybe you’ve noticed an increase in your heating bill? It’s moments like these that make you realize just how important it is to have the right window coverings.

Window awnings and canopies can be a game-changer for mobile homeowners. They not only add a stylish touch to your home but also offer practical benefits like shade, protection from the elements, and energy savings. Let’s dive into why you might want to consider adding awnings or canopies to your mobile home, how to choose the right ones, and a step-by-step guide to installing and maintaining them.

The Benefits of Mobile Home Awnings and Canopies

Window awnings and canopies can do much more than just look good. They offer a range of practical benefits that can enhance your comfort and save you money. Let’s explore how these simple additions can make a big difference in your mobile home.

1. Shield from the Sun and Rain

Imagine relaxing on a hot day without the sun blasting through your windows. That’s what awnings can offer. They block out harsh sunlight, keeping your home cooler and making those sunny days much more pleasant. Plus, they protect your windows from rain, which can help prevent water damage and reduce issues like mold or peeling paint.

2. Comfort and Lower Bills

By blocking the sun’s heat, awnings help keep your home’s temperature down. This means you don’t need to crank up the air conditioning as much, which could lead to lower energy bills. And let’s face it, who doesn’t like saving a few bucks?

3. Boost Your Home’s Curb Appeal

Awnings and canopies aren’t just practical—they also make your home look great. They come in various colors and styles, so you can pick something that matches or enhances your home’s exterior. It’s a simple upgrade that can really make your mobile home stand out.

How to Choose the Right Awnings for Your Mobile Home

Selecting the right awnings and canopies for your mobile home is essential for getting the most out of your investment. Here’s what to consider before making your decision.

1. What’s Your Goal?

Think about what you want from your awnings or canopies. Are you looking for shade, rain protection, or maybe both? Understanding your needs will help you pick the right style and material. If you live in a place with lots of rain, for example, you might need something that handles water better.

2. Material Matters

Awnings and canopies come in different materials like fabric, aluminum, and vinyl. Fabric options offer a variety of colors and patterns but need more upkeep. Aluminum and vinyl are more durable and easier to clean, though they might have fewer color options. Choose a material that fits your lifestyle and the weather in your area.

3. Size and Fit

Get your measuring tape ready! Measure your windows and the space where you want to install the awnings or canopies. Make sure you choose the right size to provide enough coverage. An awning that’s too small won’t offer enough protection, while one that’s too large might look out of place.

4. Style

Consider the style that best matches your home. Whether you prefer a traditional or modern look, there’s an awning style that can enhance your mobile home’s appearance.

5. Installation and Maintenance

Some awnings are easier to install and maintain than others. If you prefer a low-maintenance option, Dura-Bilt® Aluminum Window Awnings are a great choice due to their durability and ease of care.

How to Install Dura-Bilt® Aluminum Window Awnings

Dura-Bilt® Aluminum Window Awning Instructions

Installing awnings might sound like a big job, but with the right tools and a bit of know-how, you can do it yourself. Here’s a simple guide to help you get your Dura-Bilt® Aluminum Window Awnings up and running.

1. Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you get started, make sure you have everything you need:

2. Measure and Mark

Begin by measuring the width of your window to determine the size of the awning you need. Use the measuring tape for precision. Mark the locations where you’ll drill holes for the brackets above your window. Ensure everything is straight by using a level.

3. Prepare the Mounting Rail

If it’s not already done, apply Weather Strip “A” to the back of Mounting Rail “B” and peel off the protective paper.

4. Install the Mounting Rail

Position the Mounting Rail over the window and secure it using #12 x 1-1/2″ screws in all the pre-drilled holes. Ensure you are screwing into Framing Members or Studs. If necessary, use anchors and then attach the brackets with screws. Check that the brackets are level and securely fastened. Leave enough space for the window to open.

5. Attach the Awning

Slide the Awning Male Rail “C” into the Mounting Rail “B” on the house. Alternatively, lift the awning until Male Rail “C” fits into Mounting Rail “B” and let the awning hang down.

6. Connect Support Arm Brackets

Attach the lower Support Arm Brackets “E” to the lower Support Arms “D” using a 1/4″ -20 x 1-1/2″ bolt and a 1/4″ -20 nut. Slide the Upper Support “F” into the Lower Support Arm “D” and into the Front Support Channel “G” on the awning.

7. Raise and Secure the Awning

Lift the awning to the desired height, ensuring there’s sufficient clearance for the window to open. Secure the Lower Support Arm Bracket “E” just below the front edge of the awning with two #12 x 1-1/2″ screws.

8. Bolt the Support Arms

Drill 1/4″ holes through the top of the lower support arm “D” and the bottom of the upper support arm “F.” Install a 1/4″ -20 x 1-1/2″ bolt and 1/4″ -20 nut to secure the support arms.

9. Repeat for the Other Side

Repeat steps 5 through 8 to install the support arm on the other side of the awning.

10. Attach the Scrolls

Secure the Scrolls “H” to the bottom edge of the awning side rails using two #8 x 1/2″ Self-Drilling Screws.

11. Adjust and Test

Once the awning is installed, make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper positioning. Test the awning by gently pulling it to confirm that it is securely fastened and operates as expected.

How to Maintain Your Mobile Home Awnings and Canopies

Keeping your awnings and canopies in good shape ensures they last longer and continue to provide the benefits you want. Here’s how to maintain them effectively.

  • Regular Cleaning: Clean aluminum awnings with a mild soap and water solution. Use a soft cloth or sponge to avoid scratching the surface. For fabric awnings, follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
  • Inspect for Damage: Periodically check for any signs of wear and tear, such as rust, tears, or loose parts. Address any issues promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Remove Debris: Keep your awnings free of leaves, dirt, and other debris that can accumulate and cause damage over time.
  • Check the Fasteners: Ensure that all screws and brackets are tight and secure. Loose fasteners can lead to instability and potential damage.
  • Winter Care: If you live in an area with heavy snow, consider removing the awnings during the winter months to prevent snow buildup and potential damage.
