Mobile Home Plumbing Repair Tips

Man Using A Wrench To Fix A Sink Drain.A water leak can cause damage to your floors as well as raise your energy costs so it is important to repair any leaks you find as quickly as possible.

Here are some do it yourself tips to save time and money.

  1. First, you need to locate the leak. You may need to turn on the faucet to see exactly where the leak is. Most plumbing is located in dark places, so remember to bring a flashlight!
  2. Once you have located the leak, you will need to shut off the main water valve. Normally the main water shut off is located beside or underneath the home.
  3. Measure the leaky pipe. Determine whether you are working with 3/4″, 1/2″, or 3/8″ pipe. You also need to know the type of pipe you are working with. Most mobile homes use gray pipe ( or Polybutelene), white pipe (or Pex), or cream-colored pipe (CPVC).
  4. Identify the type of fitting currently installed. Once you know the type of pipe and fittings you will need, purchase the necessary replacement part here.
  5. Using a pipe cutter cut the pipe an inch or so above or below the leak. Cut a section of new pipe the same length as the piece you removed, then connect the fitting and the pipe to your existing plumbing. Note: Some types of plumbing such as CPVC require special glue. For these fittings refer to the instructions on the glue or fittings to ensure the fitting will hold properly.
  6. Once you have the new pipe and fitting securely attached, turn the water back on slowly using the shutoff valve. Sometimes it is best to have someone assist you with this so you can watch the repaired area for any leaks. When checking for leaks at the repaired area, pay close attention to the joints. Sometimes the pressure from the water coming back on can cause other leaks in stressed areas such as joints and other fittings.
  7. Over the next few days keep a close watch on the area to make sure there are no delayed leaks. If everything remains dry, you should be able to breathe easier knowing you have a leak-free home!
